To ensure balance between an individual’s right to protect his or her personal information and the need to collect, use or disclose personal information for reasonable business purposes, I comply with British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Personal information describes information that can be associated with a specific person and can be used to identify that person. Types of personal information collected for business purposes may include your name, personal email address, personal cellular phone number, home address and home telephone. Please note that under PIPA, work contact information is not considered to be personal information.
This notice explains collection, use, disclosure and retention of personal information and how it is protected. This applies to this website and all applications, services and tools that may be used to collect and store your information.
Why personal information is collected
The purpose for collection is to provide service and support to clients and to potential clients who contact me. Although I primarily collect only work contact information, some of our clients may provide me with personal information as an alternative means of contact. If this is the case, I may use your personal information to:
• provide information to you,
• contact you by email or phone to confirm a meeting; and,
• provide services and client support.
I ensure that individuals understand the nature, purposes and consequences of what they are consenting to, at or before the time of personal information collection.
I do not rent or sell any personal information collected from you with any third parties. Unless I am required to share personal information as a part of an internal investigation or other law enforcement purpose, or as required by law, personal information is shared with third parties only when you have provided oral or written consent.
How personal information is protected and stored
I protect your information using administrative, physical and technical safeguards to reduce the risk of loss, misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure and alteration. Sensitive information is accessible to only those employees who need to know, locked cabinets are used for paper storage of personal information, and passwords are used on computers and for application access. Any personal information you provide is processed and stored in Canada, with the exception of contact information that is initially collected through our website, which resides in a server in the United States.
In cases where my clients provide me with access to their systems and the personal information under their custody and control, confidentiality agreements are signed and I check to ensure these clients have appropriate safeguards in place.
Retention and destruction
I retain personal information for as long as the business purpose for which the information was originally collected remains valid or as required by law. Papers are cross-shredded, digital flies are deleted and trashed, and hard drives are wiped and destroyed before discarding them.
